Ben Sherman: Cut from a different cloth

Ben Sherman (born Arthur Benjamin Sugarman) started making shirts in the early 1960's. Initially inspired by the American Ivy League shirts, Ben wanted to create a shirt like no other available in Britain. With his love of colour, Ben worked with various shades of Oxford fabric, experimenting with pale yellows, blues and greens, none of which were particularly popular at the time.

With British youth culture in full flow and the introduction of the mod movement, Ben Sherman's shirts began selling like hotcakes.

50 years later, the Ben Sherman shirt is still considered to be a British icon. We thought that we'd share some of the most eye-catching images from our archives.
