High Fashion Ads of the Eighties

High Fashion Ads of the Eighties

When invited to an 80's themed party I'm all "Get the sweat bands!!"  "Where are my shoulder pads?" "These damn leg warmers keep falling down!"

An era evokes visuals of aesthetic cliches drawn from iconic images of the decade.

But what did they really wear or lust after?

We've looked in to the 1980's adverts of some of the high fashion brands that continue to set trends today.   We're trusting their judgement on what was really 'cool' in the 80's.  So with brands that most of you will be familiar with: Chanel, Lanvin, Mugler, Gucci, Armani, Nina Ricci, Versace, YSL, et al, here's the high-brow, fashion forward style of the 80's documented in fashion adverts.

Balenciaga - March 1983

Chanel - December 1980

Giorgio Armani - March 1983

Gucci - May 1989

Givenchy - February 1989

Givenchy - March 1986

Chanel - November 1987

Giorgio Armani - March 1985

Chanel - October 1985

Comme des Garcons - September 1984

Louis Vuitton - October 1989

Versace - April 1989

Thierry Mugler - October 1987

Prada - March 1989

Nina Ricci - December 1988

Versace - April 1988

Thierry Mugler - Autumn 1983

Gucci - September 1984

Chanel - October 1988

Lanvin - 1989

Versace - October 1985

Lanvin - June 1984

Chanel - 1989

Chanel - September 1983

Christian Dior - September 1984

Next time I'm at an 80's themed party I'm wearing boucle tweed and pearls because Chanel said so.

I'm still wearing the shoulder pads.
