JAMIE MORGAN |
Jamie Morgan is the son of one of my wife's very best friends over many many years, they both now being in their 70's.. .
The 'grannies' originally met when their paths crossed in part due to photography in as much that my wife's first husband Ian Berry was a photographer of note he having moved to South Africa from Lancashire in the early 50's and was 'there' at the Sharpeville Massacre 21st March 1960 and witnessed the totally unwarranted slaughter and took all the the photographic evidence that became pivotal in the ever increasing debate and abhorrence concerning APARTHEID .
After the global publishing of these very 'telling' pictures that had been sent around the world by the different agencies Ian at the age of 23 years was asked by Henri Cartier Bresson (1908 - 2004) co founder with Robert Capa in 1952 of MAGNUM.to join this celebrated photographic agency and now in his late 70's Ian's still a stalwart member.
Back to my wife Renate and her friendship with Jamie's mother, Tanya - they met in London where
Tanya's future husband (not Jamie's father, he and his sibling being from a previous marriage) was a photographer and originally from South Africa like Renate's Ian.
In the 80's Jamie who was born in London got together with Ray Petri born in Dundee and their joint street antennae were able to pick up and capture 'the mood of the street ether' . To encapsulate the thinking of 'the movement' they'd spotted they named it BUFFALO, Ray being inspired by the Bob Marley song Buffalo Soldiers.
Their joint talents of photography and style were able to present to the public some exceptional confrontational/observational photography which promoted Style over Fashion and clearly identified the attitude 'of the street' and "turned on" the editor of - The Face and subsequently other trend forward magazines such as Arena and i-D.
One of the stylists who had come to prominence after her success at Nova and joined Jamie and Ray was Caroline Baker. Caroline today amongst her many activities is the Fashion Editor of The Mail on Sunday - YOU magazine which appears every weekend. I had the good fortune to briefly meet Caroline when she attended the launch in Kensington of a luxury bag and luggage line branded Montcrief that was the concept and to the design of a friend Caroline Evans who earlier had been instrumental in founding the UK high street retailer Jigsaw
Jamie, now married and a proud father is still busy working with international clients in his role as a photojournalist and film maker with media groups such as BBC, Sunday Times, New York Times, National Geographic and WWF.
In 2007 Renate and I attended the Premier of one of Jamie's more enlightening and entertaining films - The Workshop -Get inTouch with Yourself.

Buffalo was a new wave of fashion photography that still resonates today.
